To the Ends of the Earth- Makarios

The disciples were good Jewish boys who had grown up believing the scriptures in the Old Testament about the coming Messiah and praying it would be in their lifetime. They believed that the Messiah would be a figure like David and that he would come to set Israel free from its oppressors and establish a new earthly kingdom in Jerusalem. It would all center around Israel and the Jewish people and so when Jesus tells them and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth that was not what they had envisioned. They wanted to keep the Messiah for themselves, deliverance for themselves, for people who had been desiring it for centuries, not taking it to people who had oppressed them, who weren’t looking for a Savior and probably didn’t deserve a Messiah. But the truth is that none of us deserve a Messiah who rescues us from our sin. I am so thankful that the Lord made it clear that the invitation is for all of us to be saved in 1 Timothy 2:3 & 4 where it says, “This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.”

Sometimes we have a narrow vision of our witnessing. We get content with sharing Jesus in our little comfortable community and forget that our witness is supposed to go out into the world and let the Lord determine how big that world is and how far our witness will carry the gospel.

When my children were students here at Logos Prep, they went on mission trips to the Dominican Republic to host VBS programs, dig wells, paint buildings, make meals, and encourage the people God placed in front of them at the Makarios House, which is our sister school in the D.R. That mission continues and now each year Joel Gutowsky continues to take a group of wide-eyed LP high school students to minister to people who live outside our comfort zone, to sleep in rooms with no AC, travel in vans on dirt roads that give chiropractic adjustments, and encounter people who have very little earthly possessions but are so grateful with what they have and happy to be alive. It is life changing to go to the ends of the earth-to meet people who don’t live like you but whom Jesus loves like He loves you. In our kindergarten classrooms, our students do chores and raise money each year to buy supplies to send with our high school students. As early as possible we want our students to get a vision that their witness and love for Jesus can go far beyond the walls of Logos Prep and the city of Sugar Land.

I think the bottom line here is for all of us to be “ready to give an answer to any man who asks a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear”(1Peter 3:15), to be ready to share the gospel and to say, "Hineini, Lord, Here am I, send me!” Is the Lord calling you or your children to go farther than you ever thought possible? Is He calling you to be brave and step out in faith and trust His leading, for yourself or for your children? You never know how far the Spirit will carry your witness and the impact it can have on this generation and the ones to come…. to the ends of the earth!
