The Helmet of Salvation

I absolutely LOVE the movie Moneyball. In this movie, Brad Pitt plays the part of Billy Beane, the General Manager of the Oakland A’s baseball team. He is trying to build a contender with an organization that is strapped for cash, so they turn to analytics to help them do this. During one scene, they are looking at the available free agents and trying to build their team with what little money they have. They begin recommending players that wouldn’t be the typical first ones chosen, but they recommend them based on the fact that they simply get on base. Whether by a hit or a walk, they get on base. Their philosophy is that you can’t score runs without getting people on base. So, get on base.

This seems simple, really simple, but often it is made more complicated than it is. Isn’t that like us? We make things more complicated than they need to be.

In Ephesians 6, Paul is speaking of the armor of God and calls us to take up the Helmet of Salvation. Salvation. I think we often try to complicate the call that we are given. Jesus tells us to go and make disciples and to baptize. That means making disciples of our co-workers, our neighbors, and our families. We have received the call and have the privilege and honor of carrying the call to salvation to those around us.

I like to envision this whole armor of God passage as a morning routine. I’m getting dressed, putting on my shoes, grabbing my belt, you get the picture. And then, as I’m getting ready to leave, I grab my hat (helmet) and a couple other things, and I’m out the door.

The salvation of Christ is that which guards our mind and encapsulates our thoughts. It is the filter through which we think and act.

Let’s not add to it and complicate things. It’s about Jesus and His death and resurrection that brings us salvation. Period.
