Samaria
I have a particular talent when it comes to making life decisions. Whenever I say I want to do something, it’s almost always followed by “you want to do WHAT?!” When I told my parents I wanted to climb mountains in the summer, I was met with blank stares. When I said I wanted to switch from pre-med to ministry, my friends spent lots of time trying to talk me out of it. Even when I asked my in-laws for permission to marry their daughter, my now father-in-law said, “Really? Why?” I’m pretty sure he was joking.
When Jesus gives the Great Commission, He sends the disciples to Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Jerusalem and Judea made perfect sense. The ends of the earth caused some grumbling, but we’ll talk about that next week. Samaria…that one probably earned a bunch of wide eyes and an earnest “Really? Why?!”
In our lives we will be called to do things that seem perfectly obvious. We will readily agree, hop in line, and get the job done with joy and passion. But we will also be called to do things that, at first glance, don’t make any sense to us. Whether it’s Gideon watching people drink water, Ananias told to go talk to the Christian murderer Saul, Abram taking a leisurely hike up a mountain with Isaac and no ram, or a group of people walking in circles around the fortress of Jericho, the Bible is full of stories where the unexpected brings God’s glory.
As we finish up this school year–we’re in the home stretch!--keep a look out for your own Samaria. What unexpected thing is God calling you to do? Walk boldly into those experiences and see what He has in store for you!
“Look among the nations, and see;
wonder and be astounded.
For I am doing a work in your days
that you would not believe if told.” Habakkuk 1:5
