One True God
In our Worldview class, Mr. Gutowsky and I have broken the semester up into three units: what do we believe?, what do others believe?, and how do we handle that information as followers of Christ? They flow decently well, and when I do the end of course survey I’m always amazed how equally split students are on their favorite section. Every time I teach the second unit, I’m always fascinated by the sheer number of seemingly common threads that exist with other world religions and Christianity. I don’t blame the world for being confused or tempted by false teachings, because as our students can attest, it is a LOT of information to digest and keep straight.
One thing we keep coming back to and repeating over and over again is the first part of our statement of faith: There is only one true God, existing in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. ‘Religion A’ may talk about world peace and loving each other until the cows come home, but without the God who is Love (1 John 4:8) what does that mean? If another religion trumpets compassion for all things and a reverence for life, but does not know the love the Father has lavished upon us through His Son, do they really understand what love truly is? Yet another mentions a savior who purifies through molten metal...I counter with the Son of God who purifies and saves through His own blood (Rev. 1:5)! Still more seek the wisdom of the world--enlightenment through their own efforts--and yet we’re given the Holy Spirit so we may understand God, not the world (1 Cor. 2:12).
Our God--Father, Son, and Spirit--separates us from the rest of what the world has to offer. The other religions, while interesting, are lacking what makes God special--He is a God who lives in community, who has experienced humanity, and who hasn’t left us alone in this world but given us a counselor and guide through His Spirit. My wish for us all, as Paul so beautifully puts it: “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” (2 Cor. 13:14)
