Fight The Good Fight-Shoes of Peace

Ephesians 6:13-15 Therefore, put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.

The Most Important Shoes-

I love a new pair of tennis shoes; ones that are cushiony, comfortable and cute. That is not what Paul is referring to in Ephesians 6:15 when he talks about our feet being “shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.” We know that in Paul’s time, Roman soldiers wore sandals heavily studded with hobnails for better durability and increased stability in order to keep them from slipping and sliding, especially when they were in battle. Paul is telling us here that we need to have our feet shod with salvation, a firm position in Christ, in order to stand against the attacks of the enemy. The gospel of Christ rescuing and saving us should produce a perfect peace in the heart of every believer.  This will enable us to go into battle against the enemy, standing firm because we're rooted in salvation with God’s peace that rules in our hearts.

Every parent knows that when you have a conflict with your child it goes better when the parent is calm and peaceful. When you have chaos reigning inside of you, it makes it almost impossible to calm your child. But when you’re at peace you can think clearly and stand firm in your decision about how to handle the conflict. I remember the days of trying desperately to stop the tantrum throwing and yelling (and that was just me talking to myself)! If I could remember the fact that I was created to be their mama, that God was with me and that His peace would flood my being, then I could stand firm and solve problems with my kiddos.

When we as believers have our feet solidly planted in the gospel of Christ and His peace ruling in our hearts, then we can stay firm-footed when the enemy comes against us to steal, kill, and destroy. As believers, the knowledge that Jesus has given us the gift of salvation brings a peace that the world cannot take from us.  So strap on your shoes of peace, picture the hobnails gripping tightly to the ground under your feet, and stand your ground because God is your defense!  (Psalm 62:6)  Stand firm when the world shakes, stand firm when fear is raging, stand firm when doubts are rising. Stand firm with your feet anchored in God and having done all….stand!
